WebP to PNG usually starts with an image saved from a website that then refuses to open in an older editor, a slide deck, or an upload form that only lists PNG and JPG. PNG is the safer pick of the two when the image has a transparent background, such as a logo or an icon. Your browser decodes the WebP and saves it as PNG in this tab; nothing is uploaded.
What changes and what stays
- Transparency and dimensions stay. The alpha channel and the pixel size are unchanged.
- No further loss. PNG is lossless, so the result looks exactly like the WebP, compression artefacts included.
- Animation and metadata go. Animated WebPs become a single frame; EXIF and colour profiles are not copied.
When PNG is not the best target
- It is a photo with no transparency. A JPG will be a fraction of the PNG's size. Use WebP to JPG.
- You want to keep the animation. PNG here is a still image; keep the original WebP.
- The app already opens WebP. Current browsers and many recent image editors read WebP, so check first; converting only makes a bigger file.
Frequently asked questions
Why did my saved image download as .webp?
Many websites serve WebP to browsers that support it, even when the original upload was a JPG or PNG. Right-click and save gives you what the browser received. Converting to PNG makes it usable in apps that do not open WebP.
Does the PNG keep transparency from the WebP?
Yes. PNG supports full alpha, so transparent and semi-transparent areas carry across unchanged. Use WebP to JPG instead only if you need a JPG and are happy with a white background.
What happens to an animated WebP?
You get one still frame. A canvas holds a single image, so the PNG is a snapshot of the animation rather than an animated file.
Why is the PNG so much larger than the WebP?
WebP from the web is usually lossy and heavily compressed, while PNG stores every decoded pixel losslessly. In our test a 425 KB WebP photo became a 4.5 MB PNG. That is normal, and nothing was added or improved.
