Turn a typed PDF - lecture slides, a study guide, a letter - into pages that look handwritten, or paste text and have it written out on lined notebook paper. Each letter is drawn on its own with a little randomness in its height, angle and size, so the page doesn't look machine-set. It all happens in your browser: the PDF is never uploaded, and the download has no watermark.

How to use it

  1. Drop in a PDF, or switch to typing or pasting text.
  2. Choose Keep layout (each page redrawn where its text was) or Notebook paper (written out on ruled A4).
  3. Pick a handwriting style, an ink and how neat it should be. Rewrite gives the same text a different take on every letter.
  4. Check the preview, then download the PDF or a page as PNG.

Frequently asked questions

Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?

No. The PDF is read with pdf.js and the handwritten pages are drawn and put together into a new PDF inside your browser tab. Nothing is sent to a server. The handwriting fonts are the one thing fetched from outside, from Google Fonts, the first time the page loads.

Is it real handwriting, or a font?

A font, honestly: five handwriting typefaces, written out letter by letter with small random changes to each letter's height, angle and size, a slight slope to each line and uneven ink, so it doesn't look machine-set. It looks hand-written at a glance. It isn't your hand, and a closer look shows the same letter shapes repeating.

Can a teacher tell it isn't handwritten?

On screen or printed and looked at carefully, often yes: every 'a' has the same shape, and the variation is random rather than the way a real hand gets tired or rushed. If an assignment has to be in your own handwriting, write it yourself. This is for notes, mock-ups, planners and making a typed page feel more personal.

What does 'Keep layout' do, and 'Notebook paper'?

Keep layout redraws each page at its own size, with each line of text written in handwriting where the original text was, shrunk to fit where needed - headings stay headings, tables keep their columns. Notebook paper takes the text and writes it out on lined A4 paper with a red margin, flowing onto as many pages as it needs. Pictures and drawings from the PDF aren't copied in either mode, only the text.

Which fonts are used, and can I use the result anywhere?

Caveat, Kalam, Patrick Hand, Shadows Into Light and Indie Flower, all from Google Fonts under the SIL Open Font License, which allows using them in documents and images like these, including commercially.

Why does it say my PDF has no text?

Scanned PDFs and photos of pages are images of text, with no text inside to rewrite. Run the file through OCR PDF first to add a text layer, then bring it back here.

Can I select or search the text in the handwritten PDF?

No. Each page is an image of handwriting, the way a scan of a handwritten page would be. Keep your original PDF for searching and copying.
