BMP to JPG is almost always about size. A bitmap from an old program, a scanner or a device is too big to email or upload, and JPG brings a photo down to a small fraction of that with no visible change at normal quality. Files are converted on a canvas in this tab, so they stay on your device.

Frequently asked questions

Why are BMP files so big?

Most BMPs are uncompressed: every pixel is stored as raw colour values, so the size depends only on the dimensions. An 800 x 1066 photo is about 2.5 MB as BMP however simple the picture is. In our test the JPG at 90% quality was 218 KB.

Where do BMP files come from?

Usually from older Windows software, Paint, some scanners and screen-capture tools, and embedded devices or industrial cameras that write raw bitmaps because they are simple to produce.

Is JPG or PNG better for my BMP?

JPG for photos and scans of photos. PNG for screenshots, pixel art, icons and anything with text, because PNG is lossless and still far smaller than BMP for that kind of image. Pick PNG in the format list on this page.

Does the conversion work on every browser?

Yes. Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari all decode BMP and encode JPG natively, so nothing extra is needed and nothing is uploaded.
