This page checks that your webcam works before a video call or an exam. It shows a live preview, the resolution and frame rate the camera reports, and the frame rate actually reaching the page. It can ask the camera for 720p, 1080p and 4K and show what it really gave, and save a snapshot as a PNG. The video stays in your browser: nothing is recorded or uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Press Test my webcam and allow access when the browser asks.
  2. Pick another camera from the list if the wrong one opens.
  3. Try 720p, 1080p and 4K to see the sizes your camera really supports.
  4. Press Snapshot to save a still frame as a PNG.

Checking your audio too? The Microphone Test shows your input level and lets you hear a 5-second sample.

Frequently asked questions

Is the video recorded or uploaded?

No. The preview goes straight from your camera to this page in your browser and is never recorded or sent anywhere. A snapshot is only made when you press the button, and it is saved straight to your own device.

Why does my webcam show a lower resolution than it says on the box?

Browsers start most webcams at a modest size (often 640 x 480) unless a site asks for more, and a camera only gives the sizes it supports. Press 720p, 1080p or 4K to ask for more: the page then shows the size the camera actually delivered. Some USB cameras also drop resolution or frame rate on a slow USB port or hub.

What is the difference between the reported and the measured frame rate?

The reported frame rate is what the camera driver says it is set to. The measured one counts the frames that actually reach the page each second. In a dim room many webcams lengthen their exposure and deliver fewer frames than reported, so if the measured number is low, add light in front of you.

Why is my picture mirrored?

The preview is mirrored by default, like a mirror and like most video call apps show you to yourself. Other people on a call see you the right way round. Use the Mirror button to switch it. The snapshot matches the preview, mirrored or not.

The page says my camera is in use. What do I do?

On Windows most webcams can only be used by one app at a time, so close Zoom, Teams, Skype, OBS or another tab using the camera, then try again. On a Mac, quit the other app if the camera still won't start.

Will this test my camera for Zoom, Teams or Google Meet?

It shows whether the camera works in this browser and what picture it gives, which is what Google Meet and the browser versions of Zoom and Teams get. Desktop apps choose their camera in their own settings, so if this test works but an app doesn't, check the camera chosen in that app.
