Cut the subject out of a photo and get a transparent PNG, or put it on a clean white or coloured background. The background is found by BiRefNet lite (MIT licence), an open segmentation model that runs inside your browser - on your graphics card with WebGPU, or on the CPU otherwise. The model is downloaded once (about 98 MB with WebGPU, 192 MB without) and cached, and your photo never leaves this tab. It works on people, pets, products and most objects with a clear main subject; fine hair, glass and busy backgrounds are where it makes mistakes.

How to use it

  1. Paste (Ctrl+V), drag and drop, or click to upload a photo.
  2. Wait for the model to load the first time - after that each photo takes a few seconds.
  3. Pick a transparent, white or custom colour background, and flip to Original to compare.
  4. Download a PNG (or a JPG on a solid background), or copy it to your clipboard.

Frequently asked questions

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. The AI model is downloaded to your browser and runs there. Your photo is processed on your own device and never leaves this tab.

Why is there a download the first time?

The background is removed by BiRefNet lite, an open AI model that has to be on your device to run locally. It is about 98 MB on browsers with WebGPU and 192 MB otherwise, downloaded once from Hugging Face and then cached, so later photos start straight away.

What kinds of photos does it work on?

Anything with a clear main subject - people, pets, products, cars, objects on a table. It struggles most with fine hair against a busy background, glass and other see-through objects, and photos where the subject and background are the same colour.

Does it keep the full resolution of my photo?

Yes, up to about 16.7 megapixels. The model looks at a 512 x 512 copy to decide what is subject and what is background, then that mask is scaled up and applied to your full-size photo. Photos larger than 16.7 megapixels are scaled down to that, because some browsers cannot draw a bigger canvas.

Can I put the subject on a white or coloured background?

Yes. Choose transparent, white or any colour. Transparent downloads as a PNG; a solid background can be downloaded as PNG or JPG.

How long does it take?

The first photo includes downloading the model, which depends on your connection. After that, each photo takes a few seconds: on browsers with WebGPU the model runs on your graphics card, and without it on the CPU, which is slower - especially on older phones.
