Pick paragraphs, sentences, words or list items, set how many, and copy the placeholder text or download it as .txt or .html. You get exactly the count you asked for, optionally starting with the classic "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet...", and a seed makes the output repeatable. It is generated in your browser.
How to use it
- Choose Paragraphs, Sentences, Words or List items.
- Enter how many you need.
- Pick Plain text, or HTML for <p> and <ul><li> markup.
- Copy it, or download it as a file.
Where the text comes from
Lorem ipsum is cut and scrambled from Book 1 of Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum, written in 45 BC. Read the Latin text of Book 1 (the passage is sections 32-33) and the introduction to H. Rackham's Loeb translation, which dates the work to the summer of 45 BC. Need to check the length of your real copy once it arrives? Use the Word Counter.
Frequently asked questions
Where does lorem ipsum come from?
It is scrambled Latin from Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum (On the Ends of Good and Evil), a philosophical dialogue he wrote in the summer of 45 BC. The familiar opening is cut from Book 1, section 32: "neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum, quia dolor sit, amet, consectetur, adipisci velit..." - roughly, nobody seeks pain for its own sake because it is pain. "Lorem" is the tail end of "dolorem". Links to the Latin text and to the Loeb edition's introduction, which dates the work, are on this page.
Does the text mean anything?
No. Words are taken from the Latin passage and recombined at random, so it looks like text (word lengths, sentences, paragraphs) without saying anything that would distract from a layout.
Is the output exactly the number I asked for?
Yes. Ask for 50 words and you get 50 words; 5 sentences, 5 list items or 3 paragraphs likewise. Paragraphs have 4 to 7 sentences each and sentences 6 to 14 words, so their word counts vary.
What does the HTML option produce?
Paragraphs are wrapped in <p> tags, sentences and words in a single <p>, and list items in a <ul> with one <li> each. It is a fragment to paste into a page or a CMS, not a full HTML document.
What is the seed for?
Type any number or word as a seed and the same settings always produce the same text - handy for design mock-ups, screenshots or tests that should not change between runs. Leave it empty for new text each time you press New text.
Can I use lorem ipsum in commercial work?
Cicero's text is over 2,000 years old and in the public domain, and the text generated here is yours to use. Do replace it before you publish: placeholder text left on a live page is a common and visible mistake.
