Two kinds of PDF protection
- An open password (user password): the PDF asks for a password before it shows anything. You need to know it; enter it here once and the unlocked copy opens without one.
- Permission restrictions only (owner password): the PDF opens fine but won't let you copy text, print, or add highlights and comments. No password is asked for here - the unlocked copy simply has no restrictions. Use this for documents you own or are allowed to edit.

Frequently asked questions
Is my PDF or password uploaded anywhere?
No - decryption happens entirely in your browser using pdf-lib. Nothing is sent to a server.
What if I don't know the PDF's password?
This tool removes protection from PDFs you already have the password for - it can't crack or guess an unknown password.
Can it remove copy, print or edit restrictions from a PDF that opens without a password?
Yes. Some PDFs open normally but block copying text, printing or editing, using a permissions (owner) password. For those you don't need any password here: upload the file, click Remove password, and the downloaded copy has no encryption and no restrictions, so you can copy, print, highlight or edit it. Do this only with documents you own or are allowed to edit.
Why can't I copy text even after unlocking?
Then the page is probably a scan - a picture of text with no real words in it. Removing restrictions can't add a text layer; an OCR tool such as Image to Text can read the words from an image of the page.
Does it work on any password-protected PDF?
It works on standard password-protected PDFs. If a file is corrupted or uses an unsupported encryption scheme, you'll see an error instead of a broken download.
Is the unlocked file watermarked or limited?
No watermark and no size/trial limit - it's a straight decrypt-and-download.
