Press Start recording, allow the microphone, and speak. You can pause and resume, then stop and download the recording as a WebM or M4A file (whichever your browser records), or a WAV for recordings up to 30 minutes. The audio never leaves your device: it is saved into this browser's own storage a second at a time while you record, so a long recording doesn't fill up memory and a crashed tab loses at most the last second.

From recording to text in one click

When you stop, Transcribe this recording opens Transcribe Audio with the recording already loaded. Whisper runs in your browser there as well, so a lecture, interview or voice note goes from microphone to text, subtitles or Markdown notes without being uploaded anywhere. Recorded somewhere noisy? Clean it up with Remove Background Noise first.

How to use it

  1. Pick a microphone and format if you have a choice, then press Start recording and allow the microphone when the browser asks.
  2. Watch the level bar move as you speak. Pause and resume as often as you like: it stays one recording.
  3. Press Stop, listen back, and download it, or send it straight to the transcriber.

Frequently asked questions

Is my recording uploaded anywhere?

No. The microphone audio is recorded by your browser and saved into this browser's own storage on your device as you speak. It only leaves that storage when you download it, or when you press Transcribe, which opens our transcriber page in the same browser and reads it from there. Nothing is sent to a server.

How long can I record?

This page sets no time limit. Every second of audio is written to the browser's storage as it is recorded, so memory use stays flat however long you go, and the limit is the storage space your browser allows this site, which is usually a share of your free disk space. In our Chrome test a recording took about 1 MB per minute in WebM.

What happens if the tab crashes or I close it by mistake?

What was recorded up to the last second is still in this browser's storage. Open this page again in the same browser and it offers the unfinished recording, which you can play, download or transcribe. Private or incognito windows delete their storage when they close, so there it is gone.

Which formats can I download?

Whatever your browser records: WebM with the Opus codec in Chrome, Edge and Firefox (Firefox can also record Ogg), and M4A with AAC in Safari. Where a browser can do both, you can choose before you start. For recordings up to 30 minutes you can also download a WAV file (16-bit mono, 48 kHz, about 5.8 MB per minute), which audio editors open without conversion.

Does it work on iPhone?

Yes, in Safari and in the other iPhone browsers, which all use Safari's engine. It records M4A (AAC), which plays on any Apple device. Keep the page open and on screen while you record: iOS can stop a web page's microphone when you switch apps or lock the phone. If that happens the page stops the recording and keeps what it captured.

The page says it can't use my microphone. What do I do?

Usually the microphone permission was blocked. In Chrome or Edge, click the icon at the left of the address bar, set Microphone to Allow and reload. In Safari on a Mac, open Safari > Settings > Websites > Microphone; on iPhone, tap the page menu in the address bar and open Website Settings. On a Mac, the browser itself also needs permission in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone. If another app (a video call) is using the microphone, close it and try again.

Can I turn the recording into text?

Yes. Press Transcribe this recording when you stop: it opens the audio transcriber with your recording already loaded. Whisper runs inside your browser there too, so the audio still isn't uploaded. The transcriber takes the recording out of browser storage, so download a copy first if you also want to keep the audio.
