Trim Video
Trim Video cuts the start and end off a video and can crop it to 9:16, 1:1 or 16:9 in your browser, with instant lossless keyframe cuts, so the video is never uploaded.
At a glance
- Accepts
- MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV videos your browser can decode (HEVC needs Safari or a recent Chrome/Edge)
- Outputs
- The selected clip: the original codec when cut on a keyframe, otherwise an H.264 MP4
- Where it runs
- Entirely in your browser, on your device
- What leaves your device
- Nothing - the file never leaves your device
- Limits
- Needs WebCodecs (not in Firefox for Android); instant cuts start on a keyframe; cropping re-encodes and turns HDR into SDR; videos up to 2 hours on phones and 12 hours on computers
- Account
- Not required - there is no sign-up
- Price
- Free, with no watermark and no usage cap

Drag the two handles on the filmstrip to keep just the part you want, optionally crop to 9:16, square or 16:9, and download the clip. When the start lands on a keyframe and nothing is cropped, the original video data is copied as it is, so the cut is instant and loses no quality; otherwise the selection is re-encoded to H.264 with your device's video encoder. It all happens in your browser.
How to use it
- Drop in a video, or click to choose one.
- Drag the start and end handles (or focus one and use the arrow keys; Shift moves a second at a time). Play selection previews it.
- Optionally pick a crop and slide the frame to what should stay in.
- Press Trim, then download the clip.
Honest limits
- An instant cut starts on the keyframe at or before your start, so snap to it first. Phones put one every second or two.
- Re-encoded cuts and crops are H.264 MP4 at about the original quality; HDR becomes standard dynamic range.
- Needs WebCodecs: current Chrome, Edge, Safari 16.4+, or Firefox 130+ on a computer. Firefox for Android isn't supported yet.
Frequently asked questions
Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. The video is cut inside your browser tab. Nothing is sent to a server, so a 2 GB phone video is ready as fast as your device can read it, with no upload.
Why is the cut sometimes instant and sometimes not?
Video is stored as occasional full pictures (keyframes) with the frames between them saved as changes. A cut that starts on a keyframe can copy the original data as it is: instant and with no quality loss. A cut anywhere else has to re-encode the selection. Press Snap to keyframe to move the start to the nearest keyframe before it and get the instant cut.
Can I crop to vertical or square?
Yes. Pick 9:16 for Reels, Shorts and TikTok, 1:1 for a square post, 4:5 for an Instagram feed post, or 16:9 for widescreen, then slide the frame to choose what stays in. Cropping always re-encodes the video.
Does it keep iPhone HDR?
An instant cut keeps the original HDR video untouched. A re-encoded cut is converted to standard dynamic range on the GPU, so it looks right everywhere instead of grey and washed out.
What file do I get?
An instant cut keeps the original codec (H.264, HEVC or VP9) in an MP4, or WebM for WebM input. A re-encoded cut is an H.264 MP4, which plays everywhere. The sound is kept unless you untick it.
