JPG to PNG

People usually turn a JPG into a PNG for one of three reasons: an upload form or app only takes PNG, they are about to edit the image and do not want each save to add another round of JPG compression, or they need a format that can hold transparency once the background is removed. Each photo is drawn onto a canvas in this tab and saved as PNG, so the files never leave your device.
What changes and what stays
- Pixels stay exactly as they are. PNG is lossless, so nothing further is lost, but nothing lost earlier comes back either.
- The file grows. Expect a photo to come out several times larger, because PNG keeps every bit of grain and detail.
- Orientation is fixed, metadata is dropped. Sideways phone photos come out upright; EXIF, GPS and the colour profile are not copied, and colours are saved as standard sRGB.
When JPG to PNG is the wrong move
- You want a sharper or cleaner photo. Converting cannot remove JPG artefacts; it only freezes them in place.
- You are sharing or emailing the photo. JPG is already the right format for that, and a much smaller file. If it is too large, Image Compressor shrinks it while keeping it a JPG.
- You need a transparent background. PNG alone will not do it. Use Background Remover, which outputs a transparent PNG directly.
Frequently asked questions
Will converting JPG to PNG improve the quality?
No. The PNG stores exactly the pixels the JPG already had, including any blockiness or colour banding from its compression. What PNG does give you is a copy that loses nothing more when you edit it and save it again.
Why is my PNG so much bigger than the JPG?
PNG compresses without throwing detail away, and photos are full of fine detail. In our test a 1200 x 1600 photo went from a 456 KB JPG to a 2.2 MB PNG. For screenshots and flat graphics the gap is much smaller.
Does the PNG get a transparent background?
Not by itself. A JPG has no transparency to carry over, so the PNG is fully opaque. To cut the subject out, run the PNG through Background Remover afterwards.
My phone photo is sideways in other apps. Will the PNG be?
No. Browsers apply the JPG's EXIF orientation when they draw it, so the PNG comes out upright. Our test photo stored at 960 x 720 with a rotate tag came out as a 720 x 960 portrait.
Is the camera data (EXIF, GPS) kept?
No. The image is redrawn on a canvas, which carries pixels only, so camera model, date and location are not copied into the PNG.
