The Spanish national identity card (DNI) uses a smaller photo than the 35 x 45 mm passport format: 32 mm high by 26 mm wide, in colour, on a plain uniform white background, taken from the front with the head uncovered. Because it is so small, one 10 x 15 cm print holds many copies, which is handy when the same photo is needed for a renewal now and other paperwork later. Choose the size here, frame your face in the guide, optionally whiten the background, and download the sheet. The photo is processed on your device only.
DNI photo rules
| Size | 32 x 26 mm (height x width) |
|---|---|
| Colour | Colour photo, recent |
| Background | Plain, uniform white ('fondo uniforme blanco y liso') |
| Pose | Taken from the front |
| Head and face | Head fully uncovered; no dark glasses or any garment that hinders identification |
| Head size | Not specified |
When this is the right tool, and when it isn't
- Right for a first DNI or a renewal. Both require you to hand in a photo with these characteristics at your appointment, and the decree asks for nothing more specific than the size, colour, background and pose listed above.
- Right when your wall isn't white. The decree asks for a white background specifically, and the tool can replace yours with plain white on your device.
- Not for a Spanish passport or a foreigner's TIE. This preset follows the DNI rule only. Check the rules for those documents separately.
How to make it
- Take a front-facing colour photo with your head uncovered, in even light.
- Upload it. "Spain DNI" is already selected.
- Zoom until your head fills most of the frame, centred on the dashed line.
- Turn on the white background if the wall wasn't white, and check the edges.
- Choose the 10 x 15 cm sheet, download it and print at 100% scale on photo paper.
What it can't do
It sets the size and the background, but it doesn't check lighting, focus or expression, and the police office issuing the DNI decides whether the photo is acceptable. For other documents, use the Passport Photo Maker.
Frequently asked questions
What size is a DNI photo?
32 by 26 millimetres - 32 mm high and 26 mm wide - as set by Real Decreto 1553/2005, article 5.1.b. That is smaller than the 35 x 45 mm passport photo used in most of Europe, so a passport-size print has to be recropped, not just trimmed.
Does the background have to be white?
Yes. The decree asks for a 'fondo uniforme blanco y liso' - a plain, uniform white background. Light grey, which some other European documents accept, does not meet that wording. If your wall is not white, the tool can replace the background with white; check the edges around your hair before you print.
Can I wear glasses in a DNI photo?
The rule only excludes dark lenses and anything else that makes you harder to identify. Clear prescription glasses are not ruled out, but reflections on the lenses can make the photo harder to use, so taking them off is the safer choice.
Is there a required head size?
The decree does not give one, so the tool draws a single oval as a centring guide rather than a min/max range. Frame the photo so the head and the top of the shoulders fill most of it, as in a normal passport photo.
