The Chinese visa photo is an unusual size: 33 mm wide by 48 mm high, taller and narrower than the 35 x 45 mm photo most countries use, so a standard booth or studio print will not fit without recropping. The head has to be 28 to 33 mm from chin to crown, with ears showing and a white or near-white background. Pick the 33 x 48 mm size here, zoom until the head sits between the ovals, and download a sheet with several copies to print on glossy paper. The photo never leaves your device.
Chinese visa photo rules
| Size | 33 x 48 mm (width x height) |
|---|---|
| Head | 28 to 33 mm high (official diagram), 15 to 22 mm wide |
| Margins | 3 to 5 mm above the crown, at least 7 mm below the chin |
| Background | White or close to white, no border |
| Expression | Neutral, eyes open, lips closed, ears visible |
| Head position | At most 20 degrees tilt left or right, 25 degrees up or down |
| Glasses | Allowed, except thick-rimmed, tinted or glare |
| Age of photo | Taken in the last 6 months |
| Glossy photo paper, not matte or plain paper |
The notice's text gives the head height as "20mm to 33mm" while its diagram shows 28 to 33 mm. The tool uses the narrower 28 to 33 mm range, which satisfies both.
When this is the right tool, and when it isn't
- Right when you need the printed photo. Visa centres ask for a printed photo with the application, and that is what the print sheet is for.
- Right for recropping a 35 x 45 mm photo. If you already have a good digital passport photo with a white background, load it here and crop it to the narrower 33 x 48 mm shape.
- Not for a Chinese passport. This preset follows the visa notice only; passports for Chinese citizens have their own process.
- Not for a home inkjet on plain paper. The notice asks for glossy photo paper, so use a photo lab or glossy photo paper.
How to make it
- Take a front-facing photo against a white wall, hair behind your ears, in even light.
- Upload it. "China visa" is already selected.
- Zoom until chin and crown sit between the two ovals, leaving a small gap above the hair.
- Download the sheet and order a glossy 4 x 6 in or 10 x 15 cm print.
What it can't do
The tool handles size, framing and an optional white background. It doesn't check exposure, red eye, head tilt or whether your ears show, and the visa officer decides whether the photo is accepted - the notice warns that an application may be declined over the photo. For other countries, use the Passport Photo Maker.
Frequently asked questions
Can I print a Chinese visa photo on matte paper?
No. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs notice published by the Chinese Visa Application Service Centers says the photo should be printed on glossy finish photo paper, not on matte finish or plain paper. Ask for a glossy finish when you order the print.
Do my ears have to show?
Yes. The notice asks for the entire head and face to be clearly visible with a neutral expression, eyes open, lips closed and ears visible. Tuck your hair behind your ears before you take the photo.
Can I wear glasses in a China visa photo?
Yes, unlike for some countries, but not thick-rimmed glasses, tinted lenses or glasses that catch a glare. If in doubt, take them off.
How much space goes above the head?
The official diagram shows 3 to 5 mm from the crown to the top edge of the photo and at least 7 mm from the chin to the bottom edge, with a head height of 28 to 33 mm. Zoom until the head sits between the two ovals, then check there is a small gap above the hair.
Is the file right for the online visa form?
The online form sets its own upload rules, which we could not confirm on an official page, so this page does not offer a separate upload size. Download the single photo (390 x 567 px) and check it against the limits the form shows you; resize it if the form asks for something smaller.
