Indian passport photos come in two shapes depending on where you apply. Embassies and consulates abroad now ask for an ICAO-compliant photo uploaded with the online application: 630 x 810 pixels, white background, face filling most of the frame. A printed photo is the same 35 x 45 mm (4.5 x 3.5 cm) shape. Applications from the United States through VFS Global use a 2 x 2 inch square instead. This page opens on the 35 x 45 mm size with the 630 x 810 px upload button, and the 2 x 2 in US size is one choice away in the Document list. Everything runs on your device.
Indian passport photo rules
| Print size | 35 x 45 mm (4.5 x 3.5 cm) |
|---|---|
| Online upload (missions abroad) | 630 x 810 px; up to 250 KB (Embassy in Bern) |
| Face | 80 to 85% of the photo, full head from hair to chin |
| Background | Plain white |
| Pasted photo in India (DPC, SPC, CSC) | 4.5 x 3.5 cm colour photo on photo paper, dark clothes, both ears visible; computer prints not accepted |
| Expression | Natural, mouth closed, eyes open, looking at the camera |
| Glasses | Take them off to avoid reflections (ICAO guidelines) |
| Head covering | Religious reasons only, with the face from chin to forehead visible |
| From the US (VFS Global) | 2 x 2 in, head 1 to 1 3/8 in, plain white background, coloured (not white) clothing |
When this is the right tool, and when it isn't
- Right for applying through a mission abroad. The Embassy in Bern says the ICAO photo upload has been mandatory for passport and visa applications since 1 December 2025. The online upload button gives you the exact 630 x 810 px file under 250 KB.
- Right for a US application by mail. Switch the document to the 2 x 2 in US option, download the 4 x 6 in sheet and print it on photo paper.
- Not needed at a Passport Seva Kendra in India. The photo is taken at the counter. Only applications at other collection centres (DPC, SPC or CSC) need a pasted 4.5 x 3.5 cm photo, and those must be on photo paper - the booklet says computer prints are not accepted, so have the sheet printed at a photo lab.
- Not for an Indian e-visa as a foreign national. That has its own upload rules, which this page doesn't cover.
How to make it
- Stand in front of a white wall in even light, glasses off, and have someone take the photo from about 1.5 m away, as the ICAO guidelines suggest.
- Upload it. "India passport (Passport Seva)" is selected; pick the 2 x 2 in option instead if you apply from the US.
- Zoom until your head fills most of the frame, centred on the dashed line.
- Click "Download for online upload" for the 630 x 810 px file, or download the print sheet.
What it can't do
It crops, sizes and compresses the photo and can replace the background with white, but it doesn't check brightness, skin tone, shadows or focus, and the passport office or mission decides whether to accept it. For other countries, use the Passport Photo Maker.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a photo for my Passport Seva Kendra appointment in India?
No. The Passport Seva application instruction booklet says a photograph is not required for applications submitted at a Passport Seva Kendra or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra - your photo is taken at the counter. You only supply one at other collection centres in India and when you apply through a mission abroad.
What size is the photo for an online application abroad?
The ICAO photo guidelines published by Indian missions ask for 630 x 810 pixels with a white background, the face taking up 80 to 85% of the photo. The Embassy in Bern adds a 250 KB maximum file size. 'Download for online upload' makes a 630 x 810 px JPEG and lowers the quality until it is under 250 KB.
I'm applying from the United States. Which size do I use?
Choose 'India passport or visa from the US (2 x 2 in)' in the Document list. The photo specification from VFS Global, which handles Indian passport, visa and OCI applications in the US, asks for a 2 x 2 inch colour photo with the head 1 to 1 3/8 inches from the top of the hair to the chin, on a plain white background.
Can I make the background white with software?
The missions disagree. The Embassy in Bern says that if you can't get a studio photo you may use 'paintbrush or other similar tools' to make the background uniform and preferably white, while the guidelines from other missions say photos should be unaltered by computer software. Where you can, take the photo against a white wall and leave the background as it is.
Why is there only one oval?
The Indian guidelines describe the face as 80 to 85% of the photo rather than giving a chin-to-crown range in millimetres, so the tool draws a centring guide only. Zoom in until the full head, from hair to chin, fills most of the height, with the top of the shoulders showing.
