What it means

0 10 * * 6,0 runs at 10:00 on Saturday (6) and Sunday (0). It has to be a list, not a range: Saturday is the end of the week and Sunday the start, so 6-0 runs backwards and Unix cron rejects it. 6,7 also works, since 7 is Sunday too.

When this is the right schedule

Use it when the work should happen when office systems are quiet: weekly maintenance windows, long reindexes, weekend-only promotions.

When to pick something else

Look elsewhere when you want once a week. Saturday and Sunday is two runs; for one weekly run see the once-a-week page.

Things to watch

Why not 6-0?

crontab(5) says the first number of a range must be less than or equal to the second. Quartz and AWS do accept wrapping ranges such as SAT-SUN in some fields, but a list is clear in every dialect.

Different numbers per dialect

Saturday and Sunday are 6,0 (or 6,7) in Unix and Spring, but 7,1 in Quartz and AWS. Names (SAT,SUN) work in all of them.

Weekend maintenance and DST

In Europe and the US, the DST switches happen on a Sunday morning. A weekend job at 1 AM to 3 AM on Sunday is the one most likely to be skipped or doubled; 10 AM is safe.

Frequently asked questions

How do I run a cron job only on Saturday?

0 10 * * 6 in Unix cron or 0 0 10 ? * SAT in Quartz and Spring.

Does cron accept SAT,SUN?

Yes. Three-letter names are allowed in the day-of-week field in Unix cron, Quartz, Spring and AWS.
