What it means

0 0 * * 0 runs once a week at 00:00 on Sunday, which is the definition of @weekly in crontab(5) and Kubernetes. In Unix cron both 0 and 7 mean Sunday, so 0 0 * * 7 is the same schedule.

When this is the right schedule

Use it when the job summarises or cleans up a full week, and the week boundary you use is Sunday.

When to pick something else

Look elsewhere when your week starts on Monday (ISO weeks): then you probably want 0 0 * * 1, which runs as Monday begins. Sunday 00:00 is the start of Sunday, not the end of it.

Things to watch

Sunday 00:00 is Saturday night

A job at 0 0 * * 0 runs as Saturday turns into Sunday. If you meant "Sunday night", that's 0 0 * * 1 (Monday 00:00) or 59 23 * * 0.

Sunday has two numbers in Unix, one in Quartz

Unix and Spring accept 0 or 7 for Sunday. In Quartz and AWS, Sunday is 1 and 7 is Saturday, so a copied 0 0 0 ? * 7 would run on Saturdays. Use SUN.

@weekly isn't everywhere

cronie, Kubernetes and Spring accept @weekly. GitHub Actions doesn't support it; write 0 0 * * 0.

Frequently asked questions
