What it means
0 9 * * 1-5 runs at 9:00 every Monday through Friday. The last field is day of week, and in Unix cron 1-5 is Monday to Friday (0 and 7 are Sunday). The safest way to write it in any dialect is with names: MON-FRI.
When this is the right schedule
Use it when the job is for people who start work at 9: a stand-up reminder, a daily KPI email, opening a support queue.
When to pick something else
Look elsewhere when you need it on working days in a country with weekday holidays, or for teams across several timezones; cron knows neither.
Things to watch
1-5 in Quartz is not Monday to Friday
Quartz and AWS number days 1-7 starting with Sunday, so 1-5 there is Sunday to Thursday. Spring follows Unix (0 or 7 is Sunday, 1 is Monday). Names avoid the problem: MON-FRI is the same in all four.
Quartz wants a ? in day of month
Once day of week is set, Quartz and AWS need ? in the day-of-month field: 0 0 9 ? * MON-FRI. Writing * there is an error in Quartz.
9 AM where?
On GitHub Actions, add timezone: "Europe/London" (or your zone) next to the cron line, or the job runs at 9:00 UTC. AWS's own example of this schedule, cron(0 18 ? * MON-FRI *), is in UTC unless you use EventBridge Scheduler with a timezone.
Frequently asked questions
What does 0 9 * * 1-5 mean?
At 9:00 AM, Monday through Friday, in the scheduler's timezone.
How do I write weekdays at 9 AM in Quartz?
0 0 9 ? * MON-FRI. Using numbers, it would be 2-6, because Quartz counts Sunday as 1.
Is 0 9 * * MON-FRI valid in Unix cron?
Yes. crontab(5) allows three-letter day names and ranges of names, case-insensitive.
