Compress for WhatsApp
Compress for WhatsApp checks a video against WhatsApp's 64 MB limit and, if it's over, re-encodes it to an H.264 MP4 that fits, in your browser with nothing uploaded.

WhatsApp refuses videos over 64 MB when you send them the normal way, the way that plays in the chat. Drop the video here and the page says whether it fits; if not, Make it fit re-encodes it as an H.264 MP4 aimed just under 64 MB, at the largest resolution that size allows, and tells you the resolution and bitrate it used. It runs in your browser with WebCodecs, so the video is never uploaded.
How to use it
- Drop the video, or click to choose it.
- Read the verdict: fits, or how far over 64 MB it is.
- Press Make it fit, check the preview, then download and send it in WhatsApp as a normal video.
How long a video fits in 64 MB
64 MB is about 512 megabits. Spread over a one-minute video that is roughly 8 Mbps, plenty for 1080p. Over five minutes it is about 1.6 Mbps, which the compressor spends on 720p. The longer the video, the lower the resolution; at roughly 50 minutes even 240p runs out of bits, and the page tells you how many seconds would fit instead. This is arithmetic from the compressor's planning rules, not a measurement; the result shows the resolution and bitrate your video actually got.
WhatsApp's rules
Checked against each platform's own help pages on . Sizes are counted in decimal (1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes), the stricter reading.
- Limit:
- Videos: 64 MB on every connection (100 MB at 720p on faster ones). Documents: 2 GB.
- Formats:
- Any file as a document. For Status videos WhatsApp lists 3GP, AVI, FLV, MKV, MOV and MP4.
- Good to know:
- Photos and videos sent the normal way are re-compressed by WhatsApp itself; sending as a document keeps the original.
The compressors behind it
Make it fit picks settings for you. For full control over one kind of file, use the compressor directly:
- Compress PDF - compression levels or an exact target size.
- Image Compressor - a quality slider with a live before and after.
- Compress Video - resolution, sound and quality settings.
- P2P File Share - for files too big to shrink: sends the original, no size limit.
Frequently asked questions
What is WhatsApp's video size limit?
WhatsApp's Help Center says the maximum size for a video sent or forwarded is 64 MB on all platforms. On a faster connection the default is 100 MB at 720p; on a slower one, 64 MB at 480p. This page aims under 64 MB so the video goes through on any connection.
I read the limit was 16 MB. Which is right?
16 MB was the long-standing figure, and plenty of pages still quote it. WhatsApp's own Help Center now gives 64 MB, and that is the number this page checks against. We checked it on 13 October 2026.
Why not just send it as a document?
You can: WhatsApp takes documents up to 2 GB and doesn't re-compress them. The catch is that a video sent as a document doesn't play in the chat; the other person has to download and open it. Shrinking it keeps it playable inline.
Will WhatsApp compress it again after this?
Yes, videos sent the normal way are re-compressed by WhatsApp for the connection. Starting from a file that already fits means WhatsApp has less to throw away, and you choose the trade-off instead of the app.
What about photos and PDFs?
WhatsApp doesn't publish a size limit for photos, which it re-compresses itself, and documents (PDFs included) can be up to 2 GB. So for WhatsApp this page mostly matters for videos; a PDF or photo will almost always show as fitting.
My video is too long to fit. Now what?
Past a certain length, 64 MB can't hold a watchable video, and the page says how many seconds would fit. Trim it to the part that matters, send it as a document, or use P2P File Share to send the original.
