OpenAI's model IDs are lowercase and use dots for versions, so GPT-5.5 is gpt-5.5 and GPT-6.1 Sol is gpt-6.1-sol. The table above opens on OpenAI's text models, from the GPT-6 family down to the o-series models that are being retired, with the dated snapshot each short ID currently points to. Where the ID goes

The ID is the model argument. This is OpenAI's own Python quickstart; swap in any ID from the table:

Short IDs and pinned snapshots

Most OpenAI models have two valid IDs. The short one (gpt-4.1) is what OpenAI's examples use; the dated one (gpt-4.1-2025-04-14) is the snapshot it currently resolves to. The newest GPT-6 and GPT-5.6 models list only the short ID as their snapshot. Deprecations are announced per snapshot, which is why gpt-5 shows as deprecated: its default snapshot, gpt-5-2025-08-07, is scheduled to shut down.

Frequently asked questions

What is the model ID for GPT-6?

There is no plain gpt-6 ID. GPT-6 comes in named variants, each with its own ID: gpt-6-astra (the most capable), gpt-6.1-sol and gpt-6-sol (balanced), and gpt-6-luna (cheapest). OpenAI's docs start new projects on gpt-6-astra.

Should I use gpt-5.5 or gpt-5.5-2026-04-23?

The short ID follows OpenAI's default snapshot for that model, which can move to a newer snapshot. The dated ID never changes. Use the dated one when you need the same behavior every run, for evals or regulated workloads, and the short one when you're happy to get updates.

Why would a long prompt cost more than the table says?

On GPT-6, GPT-5.6, GPT-5.5 and GPT-5.4 (and their Pro versions), OpenAI bills a prompt over 272K input tokens at twice the input rate and 1.5 times the output rate, for the whole request. The note under each affected row gives the higher price.

Is gpt-4o still available in the API?

Yes, as of October 8, 2026 gpt-4o (snapshot gpt-4o-2024-08-06) and gpt-4o-mini are listed and not on OpenAI's deprecation list. The older gpt-4o-2024-05-13 snapshot is, and shuts down on October 23, 2026.

Do I use the same ID with Chat Completions and the Responses API?

Yes, the model string is the same on both endpoints. Not every model supports both, though: OpenAI documents the Pro models (gpt-5.5-pro, gpt-5.4-pro) as Responses API only.
