The colored halo you see around some LinkedIn profile pictures comes from one of two places. LinkedIn's own #OpenToWork and #Hiring frames are added inside LinkedIn (through the Open to button, or your profile picture and then Frames) in LinkedIn's own design. A ring in any other color, or a gradient, has to be part of the photo you upload. This page draws that ring: upload a photo, pick the colors, and download a square PNG to use as your new profile picture.
How to add a ring to your LinkedIn photo
- Upload, paste or drop a head-and-shoulders photo.
- Choose a gradient or a solid color, then set the ring width and an optional white gap between the ring and your face.
- Drag the photo and use Zoom to center your face in the circle.
- Download the 800 x 800 PNG, then on LinkedIn click your profile picture and add it as a new photo, keeping the crop at full size so the ring is not cut off.
When a baked-in ring is, and isn't, the right choice
- Right choice: you want your brand or team color, a gradient, or the same ringed photo on LinkedIn and other sites.
- Not the right choice: you want recruiters to know you are looking, or candidates to see you are hiring. Use LinkedIn's own #OpenToWork or #Hiring frame for that, because it is tied to LinkedIn's job features and is removed with one click when you are done.
- Want words on the ring? The LinkedIn Photo Editor draws a colored arc with your own curved text instead of a plain ring.
Frequently asked questions
How do people get the colored halo around their LinkedIn photo?
There are two ways. LinkedIn's own frames are switched on inside LinkedIn: #OpenToWork through the Open to button on your profile, #Hiring through your profile picture and then Frames. Any other color or gradient ring is part of the photo itself - it was drawn onto the image before it was uploaded, which is what this page does.
Can I pick my own frame color inside LinkedIn?
LinkedIn's help pages describe switching its #OpenToWork and #Hiring frames on or off, not choosing a color for them. To get a ring in your brand color or a gradient, bake it into the picture here and upload that as your profile photo.
Will LinkedIn crop off the ring?
No, as long as you upload the whole square. The ring touches the edges of the 800 x 800 image, which is exactly the circle LinkedIn shows, so keep LinkedIn's crop box at full size when you upload.
Can I use this ring together with #OpenToWork?
You can, but LinkedIn adds its frame on top of whatever profile photo you upload, so it will sit over your ring. Most people use one or the other.
What do I get when I download?
A square 800 x 800 PNG: your photo in the middle, the ring around it, and transparent corners outside the circle. The photo never leaves your browser.
