What it means
0 0 1 1,4,7,10 * runs at 00:00 on 1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October: the first day of each calendar quarter. 0 0 1 */3 * gives the same four months, because the month step starts at 1.
When this is the right schedule
Use it when the job follows calendar quarters: quarterly reports, archiving, rotating credentials that expire quarterly.
When to pick something else
Look elsewhere when your financial year doesn't start in January. Shift the months, for example 0 0 1 2,5,8,11 * for quarters starting in February.
Things to watch
*/3 starts at January
The month field runs 1 to 12, so */3 matches 1, 4, 7 and 10. For quarters starting in March, use 3-12/3 (March, June, September, December) or list them.
Run it at the end of the quarter instead
Quartz and Spring can target the last day: 0 0 0 L MAR,JUN,SEP,DEC ?. In Unix cron, run on the 1st of the following month and process the previous quarter.
Rare jobs fail quietly
A job that runs four times a year can break between runs without anyone noticing. Run it once by hand after changes, and alert on failure, not just on success.
Frequently asked questions
Is 0 0 1 */3 * the same as 0 0 1 1,4,7,10 *?
Yes. Both run on the 1st of January, April, July and October.
Can I use month names in cron?
Yes. Unix cron, Quartz, Spring and AWS all accept JAN-DEC in the month field.
